Design light

We founded the SCHULTZE & KRAUSE office in Berlin at the beginning of 2000.

The focus of our activities lies in the areas of architectural lighting, light art, exhibitions and events.

With our partners we develop innovative solutions for good light. Create spaces that make architecture tangible while also saving resources.

The core team

Karsten Krause – Lichtdesigner

  • Worked in the theater for a long time, including at the Schiller Theater Berlin and the Schauspielhaus Hamburg
  • Self-employed since 1997

Further work also on: www.lightview.eu

Nils-R. Schultze – Diplom Designer und Künstler

  • Graduated from the Berlin-Weissensee School of Art.
  • Self-employed in Berlin in 1993.

Free work also on www.nachleuchte.com

On a project-related basis, we integrate specialists who support us in the realization of our lighting projects.

Create emotions

»Light conveys what is visible to the eye;
the eye conveys it to the whole person.”
Johann Wolfgang Goethe, color theory

Light shapes rooms and makes the environment tangible in a sensual way. Shadow belongs to light. From both, light and shadow, we create spaces that direct the viewer's gaze to the essentials.

With our light dramaturgies we do not simply illuminate, but create spatial tension, drawing on our many years of experience in art and theater.

Praise & recognition

Awards and honors not only make us proud – they are also a nice confirmation of our work.

2016

  • Winner of the German Lighting Design Prize for the work »Glowing«
  • nominated for the International Lighting Design Award
  • nominated for the German Design Award 2017

2006

  • Winner of the »Art in Architecture« competition for the Munich Customs Technical Training and Research Institute

Searching for ideas – and finding them

How can a space be experienced? How does it maintain its tension? How can tension be increased with light? Where are the zones that are important to the user? How can the effect of the room be supported? How does the use of the room change throughout the day?

An idea is formed from many questions and with it an answer to the questions. In this phase, people philosophize without restrictions, visions are developed, concepts are discussed and rejected, and limitations are questioned.

Is there one large solution that can serve all needs?

Planned approach

Good lighting planning takes a holistic approach into account and should be included in projects at an early stage in order to achieve time and cost plans. The planning is carried out taking into account the existing standards and the above-mentioned qualitative design criteria. Our office plans all service phases of the HOAI together with architects and users of the building and offers lighting concepts that make rooms tangible.

New concepts for intelligent houses require a depth of planning that was not necessary before. This makes the houses intelligent, resource-saving and valuable. Controls in conjunction with air conditioning systems, shading systems and workplace requirements meet today's requirements.

Shaping the idea

The implementation phase is about building the idea so that it works. A thousand small problems can arise during implementation. A good tender ensures a smooth process. Innovative solutions in particular require intensive support during implementation.

Entering new territory often means new challenges.

New building technology and smart homes in particular create new challenges for the control and programming of these systems.
